Congratulations Neighbors! We’re proud of you

Congratulations neighbors  on a job well done. We turned out in record numbers Saturday to elect six members of the McLean Community Center Board.

We cast 780 adult ballots, nearly double the 470 cast last year.

We have three major citizen boards in McLean but the Community Center board is the only one that’s elected and that spends millions of our  tax dollars. Continue reading

Youth candidates, one from the McLean High School boundary area and one from the Langley High School boundary area. Youth candidates do not have to attend these schools to serve on the board. Absentee ballots  through Wednesday, May 12. Residents may pick up an absentee ballot package at the Center’s reception desk, or may call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711, or send a request by E-mail, to have the package mailed to their homes. Completed ballots must be received by the Center by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12.

Put a Smile on Someone’s Face – Maybe Even Your Own

Help make Vinson Hall Retirement Community’s “Fun Fest 2010” a success by volunteering your time.
The Fun Fest is June 5th from 10am to 4pm at Vinson Hall, which is located at 6251 Old Dominion Dr.
Vinson Hall is looking for people willing to work two-hour shifts running a game booth, selling tickets, or staffing one of the stands selling tasty treats.
In addition to games and food, there will be plenty of entertainment including the Fairfax Youth Symphonic Orchestra, Bach to Rock, the McLean Presbyterian Choir, and the Vinson Hall Vixens Dance Ensemble.

Outstanding McLean Teachers and Students Honored by Chamber of Commerce

MCLEAN, VA – “I really don’t like talking to adults,” said Mary Roberts, of McLean High School, one of two teachers honored as Outstanding Teacher of the Year by the Greater McLean Chamber of Commerce Thursday.

Each year the Chamber honors two teachers and two outstanding business students from McLean and Langley High Schools. The other honorees: Matthew Howard, physics teacher and Caitlin Cox, a student, both from Langley, and Kristina Bettner, a student at McLean. Continue reading

Update on Candidates for McLean Center Board, Election May 15

MCLEAN, VA – Sylvia Buckland,  recently retired from the McLean Community Center, has withdrawn as a candidate for the Center’s board in the May 15 election. She cited personal reasons.

That leaves eight candidates  vying for four adult and two student seats on McLean’s most powerful board.  Board members are not paid. They do receive complimentary tickets to Community Center performances. Continue reading

Westmoreland Ave. Closed Saturday Morning for Parade

MCLEAN, VA – Just a reminder: Westmoreland Avenue will be closed from approximately  8-9 a.m.from McLean High School (near  Old Chesterbrook Road) to Poole Lane for the McLean Little League parade.

The league began its 55th season Monday. From now until the end of June, 1,100 boys and girls  ranging in age from 5 – 12 years of age, and their parents will spend their afternoons playing baseball, softball or tee ball and learning lessons of life on the League’s four diamonds located on Westmoreland Street at Poole Lane.

This epitome of  community baseball involves up to 800 families with some of McLean’s oldest businesses, such as Enrico’s Cleaners, McLean Family Restaurant, McLean Hardware, sponsoring teams.

Games – Free admission. Daily except Sunday from generally 5-9 p.m.

Nine McLean Residents Candidates for Community Center Board

MCLEAN, VA – Nine McLean residents are candidates for six seats on the McLean Community Center board, the richest and most powerful board in our community.

The candidates are vying for four adult and two student seats on the 11-member board.  Board members are not paid. They do receive complimentary tickets to Community Center performances.

Only one of four incumbents seeks reelection: Kevin Dent, who was elected in 2007. The three incumbents leaving the board are real estate salesman Lori Wertz, Drew Clark who has taken a job in Chicago, and Ed Shahin.
